Robb Wolf - Paleo Diet - Interview

We caught up with fitness guru Robb Wolf to talk about America's weight problem. In addition to writing the bestselling book "The Paleo Solution" he is also the co-host of the "Paleo Solution" podcast.

He explains why government lies are to blame for the obesity epidemic. It turns out that following the government sponsored "food pyramid" is just about the worst thing you can do.

Next, Robb clues us in on what a healthy diet actually looks like. The answer is pretty shocking, it's almost diametrically opposite to the conventional wisdom.

"The government's lies are to blame for the obesity epidemic"? That is so lame... I thought this blog's Objectivism stance was all about self responsibility? The food pyramid suggests 2,000-2,500 daily calories... But no, Robb is right, that cartoon pyramid is at fault, not the Big Mac Super Size meal that gluttons shove into their fat faces. Robb is right, its not that fatties are lazy or undisciplined, its that the are just misinformed, and its the government's responsibility to make sure they are informed. Good mentality.

When alleged experts mislead the layperson, they do indeed bear much of the blame. Many people tried to live a healthy lifestyle, investigated what that was supposed to be, and were lied to.

Clearly, this doesn't excuse the people who ate twinkies and doughnuts non-stop.

The government then made it worse by subsidizing some of the least healthy foods. For example HFCS is in practically every prepared food item, or drink, in restaurants and grocery stores. This is directly due to government interference.

It is possible, to eat healthily despite government meddling, but they have made it substantially harder than it should be. We are ultimately responsible for our own lives, but that doesn't excuse what the government has done in any fashion.

At about the 22 minute mark when the host asks the guess to defend the position that humans were healthier 12,000 years (or however long) ago, dodges the question by citing to the authority of the experts, and denounces anyone who questions this as shackled by ignorance. He does not describe the facts, or the analysis of these experts, but the second host simply moves on to a new topic. You guys need to do better in those kinds of situations.

Whatever the limitations of this one interview (and you are free to judge him based on this alone), Wolf's book and his blog lay out the case in much greater detail. Also, I don't think placing blame on the government necessarily absolves people of their personal blame for their predicament. There's plenty to go around. The food pyramid was based on junk science. The calories in/calories out theory of weight gain and loss is disintegrating before our eyes in light of new (and older!) research. Wolf is part of a major paradigm shift in this respect.
