I'm not particularly fond of Atheists either since the vast majority of them maintain and act upon a morality of Altruism. Many so-called "progressives" are atheists and we've amply demonstrated they are nothing more than whim-worshiping power-lusters. Given the utter lack of principled, fundamental, MORAL philosophy why should atheists be "praised" or "loved" merely for dropping God from the mix?
In an odd way, I'd have to agree with the people who took the poll. Certainly there's nothing inherent about _atheism_ as such that makes it unamerican (I'll use that as a shorthand for the way the poll question was phrased. But it nevertheless is the fact that most _atheists_ are flaming socialists who do have a wrong vision of what America is about. An atheist who is not a socialist or other form of "hard left" is a rare thing indeed in our society. Just go to any freethinker/athiest meeting to find this out.
For Objectivists, atheism is a byproduct of rational thinking. Rarely does anyone find lasting friendships based on a single issue. I have found no friends based on the fact that we are both Virgos, or that we both hate lima beans.
There is a problem in the way the survey is worded. "Atheist" and "Conservative Christian" are clearly categories based on beliefs; "African-American" is a category based on physical, genetic characteristics or ancestry. "Jew" is highly ambiguous. I tried giving myself the survey but I can't decide how I feel about my kids marrying Jews without deciding what the word means.
